If you can’t shake your opponents hand after a sporting event then you don’t understand competitive sports and don’t deserve to participate, IMHO.

Yes, perhaps one of western man's few legitimate ideas is The Olympics.

Particularly because it intends competition of *amateur* athletes.

Of course, here, at least, there is very little motivation to have an "amateur career"...but maybe we should question "professional sports". Is this not basically a modern form of exploitation?

Couldn't all the money that makes it possible for a single person to shoot basketball really be applied towards something productive?

And what happened to pickup basketball games? Once upon a time, it made a real community.

Amateur competition = real grassroots stuff, and good sportsmanship will make you welcome anywhere in the world.

Throw in money and steroids, and, well, here we are.

A small thing, but it's really quite common now.

The text:

Yesterday, the Ukrainian Ministry of Sport lifted the ban on participation of its athletes in competitions where Russians compete, and today Ukrainian sabre fencer Olga Kharlan took to the track against Russian Anna Smirnova at the World Fencing Championships.

The Ukrainian won the bout. After the bout, the Russian approached her opponent to shake her hand, but in response Harlan put her sabre forward and left the track.

According to the rules, fencers must shake hands after the bout, otherwise they can be penalised, up to and including disqualification. Whether any sanctions will be taken against Harlan is still unclear.

Update:

The International Fencing Federation decided to exclude Ukrainian sabre fencer Olga Kharlan from the World Championships after she refused to shake hands with Russian Anna Smirnova.

I've long suspected that underneath the bile and vile hatred of Russians and Russiophobia is fear.
It's so much easier to hate on something than to admit anything, which is the unpalatable truth NATO equipment is not up to scratch.

I mean, what hasn't been sent? The Germans sent Leopards. The Brits sent Challenger 2s. Americans sent Abrams and F-16s.
I don't think they'll get sent F-35s because as soon as those start getting shot down nobody's going to want to buy them.

Yes, there's more discussion on this new thread. The whole hard-to-believe incident was an acute embarrassment, and showed how little actual European WWII history most people now have any clue about. Russia arguably played a greater role in defeating the Nazis than the US or the UK.

Oh, indubitably.

And let's not forget how they behaved after the war.

In the end, after a long time, they left Germany, were promised NATO wouldn't expand into Eastern Europe, and the country was reunified. The Americans never did leave. They are still here, at the expense of the German taxpayer.

And NATO did not stand by its promise, eventually culminating in the situation we see now in Ukraine.

What I have learned from history is that I can at least trust the Russians to keep their word.
