“In all of these fires, these lithium-ion fires, it is not a slow burn; there’s not a small amount of fire, it literally explodes,” FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh told reporters. “It’s a tremendous volume of fire as soon as it happens, and it’s very difficult to extinguish and so it’s particularly dangerous.”

Those are larger batteries, and, of course, massively increased by Covid.

If small amounts of explosive weren't installed in these pagers — meaning that the Israelis figured out a way to remotely cause the lithium-ion batteries to overheat and explode — then that has the most unthinkable implications for all smartphone users and drivers of electric vehicles.

Another possibility is an electronic pulse “that was sent from afar and burnt the devices and caused their explosion,” said Yehoshua Kalisky, a scientist and senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, a Tel Aviv think-tank. “It is not some random action. It was deliberate and known.”

1. Size Constraints of a Pager
A standard pager is typically around 4 to 5 centimeters in width, 7 to 8 centimeters in length, and 1.5 to 2 centimeters in thickness. 2. Types of Explosives Used
Given the limited space, only a small amount of a very powerful explosive could be used, such as:

RDX (Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine): A high-energy explosive that can be molded into small shapes. Its detonation velocity is around 8,750 m/s, making even a small quantity highly effective.
PETN (Pentaerythritol tetranitrate): Another powerful explosive often used in compact, controlled demolition devices. A small quantity can generate a high-velocity blast.
3. Potential Explosive Yield
A pager might hold a few grams of high explosives, such as 3 to 5 grams of RDX or PETN. While this may seem small, the power of these materials means that such a quantity can produce a significant explosion.
Blast Impact: If positioned close to a vital area (such as on a person’s body), the blast could cause fatal injuries. The explosion's lethality would be maximized by proximity, resulting in shrapnel injuries from the pager's casing, burns, and a concussive blast effect.
4. Triggering Mechanism
The compact nature of a pager allows for the incorporation of an electronic trigger, such as:

Remote activation via a radio signal.
Time-delay circuits.
Vibration or motion sensors to trigger detonation upon movement.

Arab intelligence services have found out how Mossad placed explosives in pager batteries

Each battery of the exploded pager contained about 20 grams of pentaerythritol nitrate (PETN). This high explosive is usually used in military detonators.

It is similar to lithium salts used in batteries of electrical appliances. Therefore, even a thorough check by the Arabs did not find anything.

But Israeli saboteurs used it in the following way: at some point, the pagers began to heat up their lithium-ion batteries on a signal, but instead of burning, the battery exploded due to the PETN.

Mossad (Israeli intelligence) placed such mined batteries in the last batch of pagers that arrived in Lebanon from Taiwan (an ally of the United States).

Now the number of victims has increased to 4,000 people.

Not to make light of that incident, but something similar to that was depicted in the 2009 movie Law Abiding Citizen where a cell phone exploded. It appears the devices were designed as a mini claymore mines.

I'm anti war, pro self defense. I hope all innocent lives, regardless of nationality, defends themselves and their peers accordingly. It's the only right thing to do. I'd like to know more, and i'd like to investigate things as a free civilian.. but like, whose to say that what ever I investigate my computer wont explode. whose to say the news reels we read online won't cause someone to explode our cell phone. this is bull****... I'm just saying, we can't expect every nation to respect free speech and freedom to petition the ptb... wtf. this is an invasion of capitalism regardless of who does it... how many people in our nation have died because of exploding electronics, anyone on this forums?

It's bs. the tactic and tech as a whole, isreal had the power to make sure that hamas got those pagers.... who else has this power? Muahahaha... that's questions we should all be investigating, for various reasons.

This kind of thing should be easy to determine.

So should residues of any chemical agents added where they don't belong.

I wouldn't quite go off the deep end that your phone or laptop might suddenly explode.

What got my attention on this is that pagers *used to* have a motor, they made a lot of noise and "jumped", and so they use a stronger electrical pulse than most other devices. This would be more easily exploitable, but, I don't know if these new ones were like that.

With most batteries, there is *always* a risk of combustion, but, an explosion, of any significant force, still sounds out of line, and the scenario of an added charge with a hack that simply makes the thing overheat, is entirely possible, especially if Lebanon did not get its equipment from a trustworthy source.

It was a clever tactic, and, may take 48-72 hours to say what happened for sure, although there is a foregone conclusion, how did Mossad do it?

It may be as ANNA says. I don't have any reason to suggest it would be very different.

I'll have to track back to ensure this hasn't been posted - thanks to Ravenlocke it actually had - but the American University Hospital in Beirut were notified of a change to the pager system they were using, back on August 29th. We can but speculate....:

Putting it all together; sounds like the motors were overheated using an exploit of the old design pager, triggering an explosive charge that also trigerred a sympothetic detonation of the lithium battery. We know Lithium in water goes bang so I do wonder whether H20 is a factor somewhere?
