    • Russia Earthquake: 8.7 Magnitude Powerful Earthquake Shakes Russia; Tsunami Alert Issued :

Russia Earthquake: A powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s remote Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, prompting widespread tsunami warnings. The quake's epicenter was 85 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 19 km. Russia and Japan issued tsunami advisories, warning of waves up to 1 meter. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cautioned about possible hazardous waves across the region. Parts of Alaska, Hawaii, and the Northern Mariana Islands were also placed on alert. Evacuations began in Russia’s Sakhalin Island. So far, minimal damage has been reported, but authorities remain on high alert.
    • Tsunami alerts issued for West Coast after 8.8 quake near Russia:

A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia Tuesday, sparking tsunami warnings in Alaska and Hawaii and alerts for other areas of the West Coast.
Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula witnessed a powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, (July 29), which triggered tsunami warnings from Japan and the US Tsunami Warning Centre. Russia's geophysical service said that earthquake off Kamchatka was the strongest since 1952. The epicentre was located about 136 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, in Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of 19 kilometres beneath the seabed. The quake occurred approximately 250 kilometres from Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Videos showed buildings shaking, with reports of damage in multiple places. As of now, it is unclear if there have been any injuries.

US President Donald Trump has posted on social media about the earthquake, now classified as an 8.8 magnitude, which hit Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. “Stay strong and stay safe,” he said.

Am watching this. Live coast-cams on several islands, had a good presenter of more info, and the news station hosts are pleasant and seem competent.

Russia’s Deadly Megathrust Fault Is Ready To Rupture: A Pacific-Wide Tsunami Is Coming! Far beneath the waters off Russia’s Far East, lies one of the most dangerous—and least understood—geological features on Earth: the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench. Stretching thousands of kilometers along the Pacific seafloor, this vast subduction zone marks the collision of two colossal tectonic plates and holds the potential to unleash a disaster of staggering proportions. In 1952, it triggered a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and a tsunami that claimed over 2,300 lives within minutes. Now, decades later, signs are mounting that history may be poised to repeat itself. In 2025 alone, this volatile region has already been shaken by 7 earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7, including a powerful Magnitude 7.4 event in July that prompted tsunami warnings across the Pacific. Scientists fear a much larger rupture could be imminent!

This is exactly why we should truly value the work of doctors — people who save lives no matter the circumstances, even when the ground is shaking beneath them. The video shows oncology surgery taking place during the 8.5–9.0 magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka.

The doctors didn’t leave the operating room, didn’t stop — because a human life was at stake. This is real professionalism, courage, and dedication. Thank you to all the doctors — for your strength, resilience and for being there in the most difficult moments.

For such a large quake it's very fortunate that there wasn't a 30 to 60ft tsunami (or larger) that devastated and destroyed several coast lines of several different countries.

It is a "ironic" that this earthquake happened in the same area where some months ago after Russia unveiled "Poseidon", a 'nuclear torpedo' which is hailed as the world's most powerful underwater weapon 'capable of triggering radioactive tsunamis and even earthquakes'.
