Al Jazeera reported that the Israeli war on Gaza caused severe environmental damage, expected to last for decades. Rubble and debris exceed 61 million tons, including 4.9 million kilograms contaminated with toxic materials, according to the UN Satellite Center.

Over 90% of water networks in some areas were destroyed, leaving 70%–75% of water unsafe. Asbestos in old buildings and water networks raises cancer risks, especially lung cancer.

The report warns of increased health risks for civilians, particularly children and women, and calls for urgent international efforts to mitigate pollution and rehabilitate infrastructure.

The United States has deployed military and logistical reinforcements to its base in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah, despite Washington’s recent announcements of troop drawdowns and base closures in the Arab country.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a US cargo plane, together with an attack helicopter, landed at Kharab al-Jir Airport near the oil-rich town of Rmelan on Monday afternoon.

The Britain-based monitoring group, citing local sources, said the freighter was loaded with electronic devices, various types of ammunition, including heavy weapons, and a number of military personnel.

The observatory noted that the developments come amid attempts by the US-led military coalition purportedly formed to fight the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group to fortify and strengthen positions in northeastern Syria.

On October 21, another US cargo plane, accompanied by two military helicopters, landed at the same airport, carrying air defense systems and heavy weapons.

Approximately 2,000 troops from the US military are deployed in Syria, spread across several bases, with the majority situated in the northeastern part of the country.

Thomas Barrack, designated by President Donald Trump as the US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, stated in early June that the Pentagon aims to reduce its military presence in Syria, with only one base remaining operational.

During an interview with the Turkish broadcaster NTV on June 2, Barrack said the drawdown of troops and the closure of military bases represent a strategic realignment.

“What I can assure you is that our current Syria policy will not be close to the Syria policy of the last 100 years because none of these have worked,” he said at the time.

Former Syrian authorities consistently stated that the deployment of US forces and equipment in the northeastern flank of the country was meant to plunder natural resources.

In recent years, various footage has surfaced indicating that US occupation forces have utilized tankers to transport Syrian crude oil from the northern provinces of the country to their bases in northern Iraq, as part of Washington’s ongoing exploitation of Syria’s essential resources.

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged multiple times that American troops were present in the Arab nation due to its oil resources.

Neither one of those pigs should be allowed in a human area.

I've not seen the video, and nor will I try to find it, but Alastair Crooke told Judge Napolitano earlier this morning that it features rape. The BBC has sanitized it by referring to it as 'severe abuse'.

A former Israeli army legal chief and former military prosecutor have been detained over the leak of a video showing last year’s brutal rape of a Palestinian prisoner by soldiers at the Sde Teiman detention camp.

A court has ruled that the two remain detained until 5 November. It said there was reason to believe the two would attempt to “obstruct” the investigation into the leak.

Former Israeli military advocate general Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi and former chief prosecutor Matan Solomosh were arrested on Sunday evening.

They are accused of leaking the video and other “serious criminal offenses,” including a cover-up of the leak with false reports, the court said.

Five suspects are being investigated, a police spokesperson told the court.

Days earlier, Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned from her position and admitted in a letter of resignation that she was responsible for the leak.

Tomer-Yerushalmi’s lawyer, Dori Klagsbald, insisted to the court that she was innocent of obstruction since police had already taken testimony from five suspects and two others involved in the probe.

“There is no reason to assume that someone who did not obstruct the investigation from the moment it began would have reason to obstruct it now,” the lawyer said.

Tomer-Yerushalmi went missing briefly over the weekend. Media reports said police were searching for her after losing contact.

According to Channel 12, she left a message for her family before disappearing, prompting them to contact authorities.

Israeli media is now reporting that police have said her disappearance may have been a staged suicide attempt.

The leaked video was broadcast by Channel 12 in August 2024.

It showed an incident from July that year in which soldiers at the notorious Sde Teiman facility took aside a detainee who had been lying face down on the floor. The soldiers then surrounded him with riot shields to block visibility while they beat and rape him.

After the video was leaked, five reserve soldiers were briefly arrested for the abuse, prompting extremist illegal settlers to riot in their defense and storm the bases where they were being held.

According to the indictment filed against the soldiers, the detainee suffered severe injuries, including broken ribs and an internal tear in his rectum.

The high-profile investigation into the abuse caused outrage among coalition politicians, government ministers, and right-wing Jewish activists.

“Anyone who spreads blood libels against IDF soldiers is not worthy of wearing the IDF uniform,” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said after Tomer-Yerushalmi’s resignation.
