On the Sino-Russian abstention:

During the UNSC session on Wednesday, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that a UNSC resolution condemning the Islamic Republic would not help bring peace to West Asia.

“The adopted resolution is incapable of achieving peace in [West Asia]. It will only exacerbate disagreements between key players in the region,” Nebenzya told the council, arguing that the document ignores the “unprovoked” nature of the ongoing “aggression” by the US and Israel.

Nebenzya further emphasized that the so-called resolution disrupts the relation between cause and effect so much so that if one who is not familiar enough with international affairs reads the document, he may wrongly believe that Tehran, on its own initiative and out of hostility, has launched unprovoked attacks against its Arab neighbors.

China’s Ambassador to the UN Zhang Jun also told the council that the conflict had “neither legitimacy nor legal basis” and that the US and Israel must halt their attacks to prevent further deterioration of the regional situation.

Both Nebenzya and Zhang stressed that they tried to convince Bahrain and the US to add a part to the draft specifying the US and Israel as those that waged the war, but all to no avail.

Thanks — I was wanting to follow this better, as at first sight an abstention seemed like a very dilute and anodyne response. Of course, I know the Russian and Chinese diplomats are the wisest and smartest on the planet and had surely figured this all out, but that didn't help my own understanding at all.

And a further addendum. At 55:50 in this new video, Alexander Mercouris shares his guess that Russia wanted to veto the proposition, but China preferred to abstain and persuaded Russia to do the same.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon on Wednesday avoided responding to reports about Israeli use of “white phosphorus munitions over homes” in southern Lebanon.

“We do everything we can to minimize civilian casualties, and we are very precise ammunition, and we are very good in intelligence,” he said at a media briefing at UN headquarters in New York, adding that he is also not “familiar” with white phosphorus.

Following Sayyed Ali Khamenei's martyrdom, media reports had said his wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, was also martyred alongside him and other members of their family.

Iranian media is currently reporting, however, that she is still alive, contrary to earlier claims of her martyrdom.

➤ A US-Israeli drone strike hit a tourist camp on Iran’s Qeshm Island, a large Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz off Iran’s southern coast, killing two men and one woman and injuring another woman, according to the Qeshm police commander, cited by Fars News Agency.

➤ Authorities said the victims were members of two families who were resting at the site, which officials said was located far from any military facilities.

Qeshm Island was also in the spotlight 5 days ago when the United States-Israel struck a desalination plant there that authorities said disrupted water supplies to around 30 villages.

There was a tectonic shift in Russia's relationship with China after it annexed Crimea in 2014. When the West placed sanctions on Russia, China was standing by with an entire array of agreements. As a result, there has been growing awareness, and I would also call it fear, within Russia's elite circles about Putin becoming too dependent on China. Even Foreign Minister Kozyrev said that China will never view Putin as an equal.

If Xi convinced Putin to abstain instead of vetoing this resolution, Putin is going to pay a very heavy price. It may not be visible to people in the West, but I can almost guarantee that it will occur. Many, possibly most Russians, have started to view China with a high degree of mistrust. Russians are not foolish; they understand that the power balance between the countries will eventually grow too great to sustain the same relationship. If Mercouris is right, then Putin must proceed with great caution; he cannot allow himself to be viewed in terms of perception or reality as a subordinate or vassal of the Chinese state.
