Russia is launching the mass rollout of its digital ruble today, September 1, 2026. The Bank of Russia has activated the digital ruble as a third form of national currency alongside cash and bank deposits.


Will digital currency shield Russia from sanctions? Will it be a surveillance currency like the Chinese digital currency, the e-CNY and DCEP?

Key details of the launch include:

• Bank Participation: All 12 systemically important banks (covering over 80% of the payment market) are now required to allow clients to open digital ruble accounts and conduct transactions.
• Retail Acceptance: Large retailers with annual revenues exceeding 120 million rubles must begin accepting digital ruble payments today.
• Consumer Terms: Use is voluntary for individuals, and transactions for citizens are free of charge at launch, with a monthly top-up limit of 300,000 rubles.
• Technology: The digital ruble is a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) developed by the Bank of Russia, designed to integrate with existing banking infrastructure.

Large-scale introduction of digital ruble to begin on 1 September 2026

Major banks must be the first to offer their clients an opportunity to use digital rubles, i.e. to open accounts, make transfers, pay for goods and services, and conduct other transactions. This requirement will be extended to all banks in stages by September 2028. The relevant law was adopted today by the State Duma.

Retailers that are clients of major banks and whose revenue for the previous year exceeds ₽120 million will also be required to accept payments in digital rubles starting from 1 September 2026.

Banks with a universal licence and their clients that are retail companies with annual revenue of over ₽30 million are mandated to start processing digital ruble transactions on 1 September 2027, while the remaining banks and retailers with annual revenue under ₽30 million must comply from 1 September 2028. Retail outlets with annual revenue of less than ₽5 million will be exempt from the obligation to accept payments in digital rubles.

The law also stipulates the timeframes for launching a universal QR code based on the solution of the National Payment Card System (NPCS). This code will make non-card payments much easier for both buyers and sellers and will help avoid confusion with multiple QR codes at the checkout. A universal QR code will offer various payment options: the Faster Payments System, banks’ platforms and buy-now-pay-later services, and – later on – digital rubles. It should be noted that customers will retain all bonuses and discounts related to the chosen payment method.

All banks are to adapt their systems to support the universal QR code option by 1 September 2026, although they may do this earlier if they wish.

The NPCS will generate a universal QR code for banks on a fee-free basis, which will reduce the costs of its integration. The timeframes for banks to connect retailers to the universal QR code system will be determined by the Bank of Russia Board of Directors.

As a reminder, digital rubles will circulate alongside cash and non-cash rubles. Individuals will be able to open digital wallets and use the national digital currency in conventional banking apps connected to the Bank of Russia’s digital ruble platform. All digital ruble transactions will be fee-free for individuals. People will choose at their own discretion whether they want to pay in digital rubles or not.

The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for a new world map that more accurately reflects the true size of continents, challenging a cartographic tradition that dates back to 1569 . The resolution, which passed with an overwhelming 164 votes in favor, saw the United States as the sole country to vote against it .

The resolution encourages countries and institutions to adopt the Equal Earth projection . This map, designed in 2018, is intended to correct the long-standing distortions of the Mercator projection, which was created for maritime navigation . The Mercator map inflates the size of landmasses near the poles, making regions like North America and Europe appear much larger, while shrinking areas near the equator, such as Africa .

The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution promoting the progressive replacement of the traditional Mercator projection with equal-area models such as Equal Earth, following a campaign led by African countries to end long-standing distortions in global maps.

The measure received 164 votes in favor, with six abstentions — Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine — and one vote against, cast by the United States. It was introduced by Togo on behalf of the African group and endorsed by the African Union.

The Mercator projection, devised in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator, was created to aid maritime navigation but expands landmasses progressively farther from the equator. As a result, Greenland appears similar in size to Africa even though Africa is about 14 times larger and exceeds the combined area of the United States, China, India and Western Europe.

The resolution argues that the visual bias contributed to the symbolic minimization of Africa and perpetuated a Eurocentric view of the planet. The African Union described the initiative, called “Correct the Map,” as an act of cognitive justice and memory repair aimed at reversing what it termed cartographic colonialism.

Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey said maps guide education and influence collective perceptions, adding that a “fair map does not change the geography of the world; it changes the way we see the world.”

The adopted text does not prohibit Mercator or impose a single model, but urges governments, educational institutions, agencies such as UNESCO, and technology companies to use equal-area designs when the relative size of landmasses is relevant.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced that France plans to abandon the Mercator projection in official cartography, aligning with the African proposal. On the other hand, the U.S. delegation rejected the measure as a much broader and more radical ideological project, saying it mocks the work and purpose of this institution.

Ukraine and the European Union expressed reservations about applying Equal Earth on web platforms regarding international borders and disputed territories. Ireland, speaking for the EU, clarified that support concerns only landmass proportionality and does not affect sovereignty, territorial status or recognized borders.

From Addis Ababa, the African Union celebrated the vote as a historic milestone, stressing that how geography is depicted directly influences perceptions of the political, demographic and geopolitical weight of the Global South.

This is Dawa Nurbu Sherpa, a 26-year-old mountain guide from Sankhuwasabha, Nepal. He is also a husband, a father of two young children and the main breadwinner of his family. Earlier this spring, Dawa was guiding a Swiss climber on Annapurna I (8,091 m) when his life changed forever.

According to Dawa, while they were approaching the summit on April 19, 2026, his client ran out of bottled oxygen. Dawa gave him his own supply, believing they could descend together to another cylinder he had cached above Camp IV. They reached the summit, but without oxygen Dawa became increasingly slow and exhausted. His client descended faster with the oxygen Dawa had given him, while Dawa gradually fell behind and was eventually left alone high on Annapurna.

Weak, exhausted and without supplementary oxygen, Dawa says he lost the route above Camp IV and found himself in an area without fixed ropes. Unable to continue safely, he was forced to spend the night exposed high on the mountain. By then, his hands were beginning to go numb. The following day, he somehow found the route again and began making his way slowly down, already suffering severe frostbite.

A rescue operation was launched by 8K Expeditions, and experienced mountain guide Ashok Lama climbed back high on Annapurna to help locate and rescue him. Dawa was eventually brought down and evacuated from Camp III before being admitted to hospital. He had survived one of the world's most dangerous mountains, but the price of that survival would follow him home.

Doctors later had to amputate seven of his fingers.

For Dawa, those hands were his livelihood. They held ropes, carried equipment and helped guide climbers safely through the Himalayas. They were the hands through which a 26-year-old father earned enough to feed his family and raise his two small children. Now, after surviving Annapurna, he faces perhaps the most difficult chapter of his life: trying to find a new way to support them.

Dawa says the future sometimes feels dark. He does not know whether he will ever be able to return to the profession that supported his family, while his medical needs, rehabilitation and everyday responsibilities continue. His children are still young, and the family that depended on his work before Annapurna still depends on him today.

A mountain guide gave up his own oxygen when the person he was responsible for needed it. He survived, but he came home having lost seven fingers. Now he needs our help.
